#7369 $2,200Collette Dinnigan "new" couture wedding/evening gown with matching shawl
When I first saw this exquisite empire-waist gown, I thought of the radiant Josephine Bonaparte in 1804 with the Emperor Napoleon at her side and all of Paris at her feet. Then I noticed the very modern, sensational below-the-waist back.
Collette Dinnigan is celebrated for iconic designs that evoke the past through elaborate use of beading, lace, and luxurious fabrics. Her designs have been worn on the red carpet by Halle Berry, Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts, Cate Blanchett, Megan Gale, and Elle Macpherson.
Purchased new several years ago by a New York socialite for $5000, this majestic gown—fit for an Empress or for a queen of high society—has never been worn. Here is a grand wedding gown in which there inheres an uncommon beauty that is both historic and classic. New today, it would be $6000-$6500.
I love the contrast of silver embroidered lace to the ornate bodice decoration of rock diamond pearls, glittering rhinestones, and silver beads. The ornamentation is hand applied. The scalloped pattern of the lace forms a lovely hem border and back train.
Lined with a layer of silk georgette on top of a second layer of silk charmeuse, the gown closes in back with an invisible zipper. The matching georgette shawl has a narrow border of beading. The shoulder straps can be adjusted to the proper length.
Collette Dinnigan made her mark when her high style formal wear was shown in Paris in 1995. Her work has always been informed by a deep knowledge of fashion history. In this resplendent gown, we see an inspired amalgam of traditional and modern: the neoclassical or empire-style waist; and the modern below-the-waist back.
The condition is excellent. The gown has never been worn.
The gown measures: 38" bust, 32" empire waist, 42" hip, and 53" center-front length (longer in back).
The shawl is 84" long by 20" wide.
