Austrian plush cloche hat, 1920s
Serious collectors know it is often more difficult to find well preserved day wear than fancy special occasion pieces. Day wear was usually worn until it died.
Our beautifully detailed cloche hat would be the perfect accessory for a coat display. The hat is fashioned from black plush with a black felt upturned brim. I love the geometric Deco decoration on the brim. The black felt bands decorating the lower back are held in place with two gold tone metallic clips.
The cloche hat is a bell-shaped hat for women created in 1908 by milliner Caroline Reboux. It became popular after 1923. The name is derived from cloche—French for "bell".
The condition is excellent.
The imported Austrian hat is marked size 22 on the back of the label.
