Wool carpet bag, late 19th century

Carpet bags, often used to carry sewing projects while traveling, are an enduring favorite. This bag features an exuberant floral pattern in warm shades of brown, tan, olive, red, and cream. The handsewn bag is lined with blue cotton and has an inner pocket. The flap closes with hooks and a center tie.

The condition is very good. Carpet bags, often heavily used, generally show signs of wear. This one has a few small moth nibbles that do not go all the way through. There is also some loss of wool on the handle.

It measures 14 1/2" by 12".
