Museum-quality Brussels Mixed Lace Wedding Veil, c.1880
Nothing can compare with the romantic appearance of handmade lace. This exquisite veil has a three-dimensional floral pattern which radiates out from the center of the panel. The pattern is skillfully fashioned without the repeats found in machine imitations. The veil is hand fashioned from fine linen thread.
I love the textured quality. The edges of the motifs are finished with a raised gimp thread. Many of the flowers have a raised appliquéd center. The veil, which is rectangular and flat, was temporarily pinned to the mannequin for the pictures.
Imagine a show stopping walk down the aisle! This museum-quality treasure can actually be worn. Or you can display it in your home, where you and your friends can delight in the exquisite, superbly finished hand work.
Brussels was an important center for the manufacture of fine handmade lace in the 17th century. Pattern styles evolved during the Industrial Revolution. After a late 18th century decline, the handmade lace industry revived under Napoleon's patronage, continuing through the lace trade boom of the 1840s-80s. The First World War saw the end of the Belgian fine handmade lace industry.
The condition is excellent. I found just a few tiny, pale age spots. In my opinion, they are part of the beautiful patina and are not to be considered a flaw.
It measures 29" wide by 109" long.
