Beaded Hollywood-style evening dress, 1940s
This seductive evening dress embodies 1940s Hollywood glamour. At MGM costume designer Adrian (probably borrowing from Schiaparelli) dressed Joan Crawford in dresses and suits with square shoulders, which became all the rage after she appeared in Letty Lynton (1932). You will feel ready for the red carpet in this beauty.
The dress is fashioned from black rayon crepe embellished with a scrolling pattern of sparkling black beads. The sweetheart neckline is bordered with a wide band of closely clustered beads on sheer black mesh over a nude background.
There are square shoulders and thick shoulder pads. The figure flattering design has a smoothly fitted bodice that comes to a deep "V" in front, flattening the tummy.
The softly pleated skirt front disguises hip fullness. There is a deep hem slit for ease of movement. The dress closes on the side with a metal zipper.
The condition is almost excellent. I found two tiny mends that are barely visible.
It measures: 42" bust, 31" waist, 43" hip, and 57" from the shoulder to the hem.
