French cocktail dress

#6978         $650

French wool crepe halter dress, 1980s-1990s

Christian Dior enthused about the LBD in 1954: "You can wear black at any time. You can wear it at any age. You may wear it on almost any occasion; a 'little black frock' is essential to a woman's wardrobe." For more on the LBD, read our article on The Little Black Dress.

Since first made popular by Coco Chanel in the 1920s, the little black dress has remained a perennial favorite. This one, by the French designer Myréne de Bémonville, is a double-breasted halter version of black wool crepe. The halter style bodice was a special favorite of Marilyn Monroe: this dress shows you why.

The dress closes in front with self-covered buttons to just above the knee; the halter closes at the back of the neck with a self-covered button. The bodice fronts are lined with black satin. The skirt has two beautifully tailored welt pockets.

A stylish, sexy cocktail dress is again a must-have in your wardrobe—the cocktail party is making a comeback (from the 1950s). A 3/6/08 Wall St. Journal article discussed this fashion phenomenon: "In 2003, a beautiful designer cocktail dress retailed for around $2,000. Today it is approaching $4,000." Our classic de Bémonville beauty is finer than today's designer cocktail dress. If it fits right, then you are the big winner!

The condition is excellent. It is clean and ready to wear.

The size is marked 40.
It measures: approximately 36" bust, 27" waist, 38" hip, and 44" center-front length.
