Needle point bag, 1920s
What joy and gaiety in the design! I love the birds that resemble mythological creatures, worked in fine petite point. There are different birds on the back and front—see the pictures below. The exuberance and vivacity of the bold design will be ever pleasing.
The needlepoint design is worked in rich shades of burgundy, blue, green, rust, aqua, and ivory on a ground of dark brown. The bag, lined with aqua silk, has two inner pockets that hold a coin purse and mirror. The outside seams are piped with corded silk.
The clasp with hanging drop is enameled in red, green and black. The metallic frame and chain handle have a lovely golden hue.
The condition is excellent. There are just a few age spots on the lining. It measures: 7" tall (not including the chain) by 7" at the widest point.
