#9369 $95
4 7/8 yards fine French whitework, c.1900
If you are a regular visitor to Vintage Textile, you know of my affinity for the pristine purity of whitework. Without the enhancement of color, a whitework design depends solely on creative combinations of texture.
The diminutive floral pattern of this lovely panel would be perfect for making dolls' clothes. The panel is one of many pieces that came from a suitcase full of a French salesman's samples. The suitcase was stranded in New York during World War One. It was lost and not found again until the 1970s. The embroidery is very finely done by machine.
The condition is excellent. The fabric, which has darkened with age, just needs a good soak to be white again.
It measures 175" long by 5" wide. The embroidery is 1/2" wide.
