Liberty & Co. printed silk damask shawl, early 20th century
An antique fashion accessory, like this lovely shawl, is the ideal way to add a touch of elegance to a basic dress. The beauty of antique textiles makes them eagerly sought collectibles. You will find nothing comparable in a modern copy. This exquisite shawl, though unlabeled, has the Liberty padded Chinese flower closure.
The shawl features a rich damask ground of satin and silk crepe, woven with robust bouquets of roses. The ends and borders of the shawl are printed with an amazing, intricate Persian-style pattern. See the 5th picture from the bottom. I love the muted, rich coloring.
Liberty & Co. started out as an importer of Oriental wares, including fabrics. The Company began producing its own fabrics in 1879. Liberty's was best known for the luxurious "aesthetic" silks in the clinging robes, draperies, and shawls worn by the artistic community.
The condition is excellent.
The shawl is 42 1/2" wide by 92" long.
