Hand-embroidered whitework shawl, c.1830

Early 19th century whitework, executed on very sheer fabric, often did not survive over the centuries. This lovely shawl, which is too far gone for mending, still has many yards of usable embroidery that can be recycled. The ruffled flounces, which are almost perfect, total over 8 yards.

The untold hours of skilled hand labor that went into creating this piece could not be duplicated today. The fine hand embroidery speaks to us across time.

The condition is fair. Sadly, this lovely shawl is a cutter. The shawl has been washed so you know it will not deteriorate any further.

The shawl is 30" long at the center-back and 116" from tip to tip.
