Zandra Rhodes hand-painted feather-pattern pleated silk bag, 1970s
In the early 1970s, the work of Zandra Rhodes was featured as part of the Cecil Beaton fashion retrospective at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The show celebrated Rhodes' flair for romantic fantasy designs.
Rhodes' sure touch with brilliant textiles in her extravagantly feminine creations is a natural outgrowth of her background. She originally trained in print design and lithography, not in fashion design. That came later.
This piece is an excellent example of her style. The design began with a one-of-a-kind painting, inspired by feathers. Her prints are like a personal form of handwriting. The painted fabric was totally pleated, creating a marvellously textured surface. The bag is lined with red satin.
The condition is excellent.
It measures 6" tall by 5 3/4" wide. The tie straps are 18" long.
