Hand-embroidered cotton day cap, c.1810-20
This charming day cap, fashioned from fine cotton lawn, is lavishly embellished with whitework. The pattern features a lively assortment of texture from satin stitch, eyelets, and French knots. The edges can be adjusted with the narrow corded drawstrings.
If you are a regular visitor to Vintage Textile, you know of my high opinion of fine hand embroidery—a major art form. I have a special affection for the pristine purity of whitework. Without the enhancement of color, a whitework design depends solely on creative combinations of texture.
The condition is excellent.
The cap is 8" from the front to the center back and is 4 1/2" tall.
