Embroidered felt appliqués, c.1900
Several years ago I sold a coat (below) totally covered with similar felt appliqués. I was delighted to find these pieces that reminded me of one of my favorite items.
There are 6 appliqués: one large, two matching smalls, two matching mediums, and one narrow band. The appliqués have a foliate design of deep claret on a ground of lighter red. The design is outlined with chain stitching that matches the ground.
The condition is almost excellent. There are a few insignificant moth nibbles.
The large piece is 35" long by 21" wide at the top.
The two small pieces are 7" by 3 1/4".
The two medium pieces are 15 1/2" by 3 1/2".
The band is 15" by 1 1/2".
