French hand-embroidered silk nightgown, 1930s
Handmade silk lingerie, imported from France in the early 20th century, has enduring appeal for collectors who love its unapologetic femininity. The soft curves and luxurious silk set the mood; the exquisite hand embroidery and dainty hand finishing details have an irresistible feminine appeal.
The bodice of the lovely nightgown is fashioned from a combination of pastel pink and blue satin. The scalloped floral motifs on the bodice, gently outlining the breasts, have a heart rending beauty.
The skirt is matching blue silk crepe de chine. The label, Suzanne Foly/Rue St Honoré 372/Paris, is on one of the side seams of the bodice.
There is a good reason why generations of fashion-savvy women have coveted handmade French lingerie from early 20th century. It is not only exquisitely beautiful in itself but also has a well deserved reputation for working "bedroom magic" on the wearer's partner.
The condition is excellent. It is clean and ready to wear.
It measures: 36" bust, 29" waist, full in hip, and 56 1/2" from shoulder to hem.
