Brussels mixed lace curved flounce, c.1890

Bouquets of lace flowers never fade! This lovely lace flounce is fashioned from fine ivory cotton/linen thread. The intricate guipure-style pattern includes tulle insertions with needlepoint roses.

The term "guipure" refers to fine lace where the pattern motifs are close together and either touching or linked by "bars" of lace. The relatively large openings in the work contribute to the beauty of the pattern. This concept is analogous to what art critics call "negative space", e.g., as in Op Art.

Curved flounces can be used wherever you want. The softly draped ruffles are perfect for framing a neckline. Handmade lace pieces of such high quality were generally removed from garments no longer in use. The lace pieces were recycled, sometimes more than once. This is an exceptional example of the lace maker's art!

The condition is excellent.

It measures 6 3/8" wide. The outer edge of the curve is 87" long, and the inner edge is 40" long.
