Chanel Boutique wool tweed jacket, c.1980
When Karl Lagerfeld became head designer for Chanel Boutique, the traditional Chanel idiom took on new life. Lagerfeld was able to successfully reinvent the classic Chanel look. This stylish tweed jacket is an excellent example of traditional, yet updated, Chanel. I purchased this jacket from the private collection of a New York fashionista, who favored cutting-edge design.
The jacket captures the essence of the famous Chanel "look": elegant, comfortable, and practical. As Coco Chanel used to say, "Fashion fades; only style remains."
The simple unconstructed cardigan style in navy wool tweed could have been the work of Mademoiselle herself. The grosgrain ribbon trim, the pockets placed on the diagonal, and the rounded hem give the jacket a modern feeling.
The jacket is lined with navy silk with small interlocking "CCs" that are the Chanel Boutique logo. The buttons with the CCs are decorative only. The jacket has no closure.
How did Gabrielle Chanel come to be known as Coco Chanel? Most of the stories focus on her short-lived career as a cabaret singer, but which one is factual? My favorite one links her big cabaret song, "Co-Co-Ri-Co" (French for "Cock-a-doodle-do") with her fondness for horseback riding in Paris at the crack of dawn, as the cock crows "Co-Co-Ri-Co."
The condition is excellent. It is clean and ready to wear.
Generous size. It measures: 42" bust, 34" waist, 42" hip, approximately 22" sleeve length, and 30" from the shoulder to the hem.
