Cotton print blouse, 1890s
Paradoxically, everyday antique clothing is often the rarest because it was worn until it died; it was then used for cleaning rags. Most of what has been preserved is fine antique clothing.
This charming blouse is an excellent example of how an ordinary woman dressed in the late 19th century. Made from navy/green printed cotton, the blouse closes on one side of the front panel with hidden snaps.
The sleeves and upper portion are lined with striped cotton (2 different stripes), which added warmth to the blouse. The green fabric-covered buttons are decorative only.
The condition is very good to excellent. The fabric is slightly faded across the back shoulders—see bottom picture. Also there is a small stain in back.
It measures: 40" bust, 44" waist and hip, 15" from shoulder seam to shoulder seam, 21" sleeve length (including the cuff), 10" cuff circumference, and 22" from shoulder to hem.
