Edwardian straw hat

#1582          $750

Decorated straw hat, c.1910
A Study in Orange

This superb straw hat has the original decoration intact. It is a rare treat to find an Edwardian hat that has not been "improved."

The unlined hat is fashioned from textured brown straw. The brim is decorated with ruched silk damask ribbon woven with a paisley pattern in shades of melon, pale green, and navy.

A rope of orange velvet and metallic gold coils around the ribbon and across the brim on one side. Two jaunty ostrich plumes complete the decoration.

Keep looking at the detail pictures. You will be filled with admiration for the brilliant use of color, especially varieties of orange. Conan Doyle wrote "A Study in Scarlet." This Edwardian hat is truly "A Study in Orange."

In this masterful cornucopia of color, delight with me in the subtle interplay of the varieties of orange vying with each other for supremacy: melon, persimmon, peach, and apricot orange.

The condition is excellent and all original.

The size is marked 36 with a tag inside. It measures: 11 1/2" by 9 1/2", 20" around the inside crown, and 6" tall.
