Victorian lace skirt

#1798          $750  Sold

Tamboured net skirt, c.1840-1850

Our skirt was embroidered with a tambour hook on white cotton net. The fancy fill centers of the flowers were darned in by hand. The embroidery has a softer, more flowing quality than that found in 20th century machine embroidered nets. The four horizontal rows of embroidery nicely counterpoise the vertical silhouette.

Tambour work refers to chain stitch embroidery produced by a tambour hook on fabric that is tightly stretched in a frame called a tambour ("drum"). Chain stitch sewn by hand with a needle will show separate stitches on the back side. Tamboured chain stitch shows a continuous thread on the reverse.

The condition is very good to excellent. There are several small mends that get lost in the fullness of the skirt. They totally disappear when the skirt is worn over a white slip or petticoat.

The skirt has a 28 1/2" waist and is 40" long.
