Hand-embroidered linen camisol-style vest, c.1918
This charming vest came from a French collection that featured many exceptional items like the lace ensemble listed in the 1920s section.
The vest is fashioned from hand-embroidered ecru linen. I love the textural variety of the open work fill and drawn thread work combined with three dimensional padded satin stitch and French knots. The straps and top borders are of hand crochet lace. The vest closes in front with small hooks. The crochet buttons and Irish lace bow are decorative only.
The vest has an ancient lineage in women's costume. Ladies' waistcoats or vests were worn in the Middle Ages for warmth. In the 18th century, they were again borrowed from gentlemen's suits for several different functions. By the early 20th century, the vest was back in style as a boudoir garment.
The condition is excellent and wearable.
It measures: 36" bust, 30" waist, 36" hip, and 14 1/2" center-front length.
