Victor Costa taffeta evening dress, 1970s-80s
Although sophisticated black is always in style, sometimes you need to break out of the fashion straitjacket and have a little fun. This playful plaid take on the evening dress does the trick!
Victor Costa had a sixth sense for trends. He was obviously up for some design magic with this cheerful number. Deciding which new looks to adapt for the market is an art in itself, as I learned as a print designer when I worked on 7th Avenue.
The happy royal blue plaid hue emphasizes the sculptured shape. I love the play of diagonal lines around the peplum. The pleated bodice draws attention to your curves. The bodice is boned for support; the dress is completely lined. It closes in back with a nylon coil zipper. The skirt is slit at the center-back for easy walking.
Costa was the king of copycats, known for smart adaptations of Paris couture. He knew how to give women the look without the mind-boggling price. A stylish vintage piece makes more sense than ever in the current recession. For about the same price, a vintage garment has superior construction and materials vs. what you get in a new designer cheap-chic piece.
The condition is excellent. It looks like it was never worn.
It measures: 36" bust, 28" waist, 40" hip, and 53" center-front length.
