1920s flapper dress

#2208          $1,450

French beaded chiffon flapper dress, c.1925

The dress is fashioned from cherry red silk chiffon embellished with red crystal beads and glittering rhinestones. The scalloped layers, swaying when the flapper danced the Charleston, were considered risqué at the time. This beauty can be worn today—but, please, no dancing. Your dress will last outlast you if it is treated gently.

The most important colors in fashion have always been white, black, and red. Although red has been used more sparingly than white or black, red is nevertheless the psychologically preeminent color, since it is the most chromatic and saturated hue. Hence, it bestows a sense of vividness and brilliance, and always and everywhere a sense of heightened excitement.

In some periods, red wes reserved for royalty; in others, it was confined to the demimonde. In the 1980s we had the "power red" of the career woman. The circle comes around: in 2007 as in 1925, this magnificent cherry red dress will turn heads and win admiring glances.

The simple chemise style slips over the head with no closures. The label reads "Made in France/Rue de la Paix Gowns/Paris."

The condition is almost excellent. I found a few tiny holes near the hem. They are virtually invisible because the fabric is backed with another layer of red. The holes would be more obvious if they were mended.

It measures: 38" bust, 36" waist, 39" hip, and 31" center-front length.
