Deco printed silk robe, c.1925
This exemplary Deco design from the heyday of the movement (1925) shows off the style in all its self-confident glory: elegant, bold, and optimistic. The years 1928-1929 saw the swan song of the Deco style, as if in anticipation of the coming economic crash.
The robe is fashioned from silk crepe de chine. It is straight cut, unlined, and has no closures. The exuberant Deco design is a celebration of color and graphic design.
Art Deco was a style of decorative art developed originally in the 1920s with a revival in the 1960s. It was marked chiefly by geometric motifs, curvilinear forms, sharply defined outlines, and bold colors.
The condition is very good. There are a few very pale stains and one threadbare spot. As a lover of early 20th century textiles I am more than willing to overlook these flaws. The most interesting pieces often have flaws, probably because they were loved and worn to death by their original owners.
It measures: 48" circumference and 42" from shoulder to hem.
