Silk faille bonnet, c.1888
Bonnets from the late Victorian period were pure embellishment with no pretext of function. This delightful little bonnet was meant to perch on top of an elaborate coif, more as a hair ornament than to shield the wearer from the weather.
The bonnet is fashioned from black silk faille and is lined with brown polished cotton. The front is decorated with a corsage of silk roses, black lace, and beaded branches—the faceted bronze beads catch the light and sparkle.
There is a small paper tag under the lining with the handwritten number "231."
The condition is excellent and all original. The hat looks like it was never worn. It measures: 7 1/2" from front to back and 5 1/2" across.
