Dior New York little black dress, c.1955
Much has been written about dressing up and accessorizing the little black dress. In the hands of a master designer like Dior, the perfectly cut little black dress stands on its own as soft sculpture. The sculptured sleeves make this dress stand out in a crowd.
Our Dior-New York dress is fashioned from heavy-weight black silk crepe and is inter-lined with black China silk. The sleeves are lined with black taffeta to support the shape. The dress closes in back with a hand-stitched metal zipper.
Christian Dior enthused about the LBD in 1954: "You can wear black at any time. You can wear it at any age. You may wear it on almost any occasion; a 'little black frock' is essential to a woman's wardrobe." Dior credits Chanel with with establishing "style, elegance, and authority."
This endorsement from the creator of the revolutionary New Look may be surprising, since Dior in 1947 was in revolt against Chanel's "uniform." He intentionally set out to evoke a happier time, inspired by "childhood memories of the scented, rustling goodnight kiss of his Edwardian-garbed mother," according to Caroline Milbank.
This shows once again that the LBD is a template, which great designers use as a starting point. Chanel emphasized the practicality of the LBD. Dior saw in the LBD still another expression of traditional female glamour and mystery. Our beautiful Dior LBD can worn as is or dressed up for evening wear.
