Madeleine de Rauch dress & jacket, 1960s

Madeleine de Rauch was a top Paris couturier (1932-1973), who opened a shop (1928) with her own designs under the name House of Friendship. In 1932 she started a couture house known for fluid, feminine clothes and sporty day looks.

This stylish ensemble is based on a Madeleine de Rauch design produced by Mendes. According to a 1957 New York Times article about couture-authorized Paris styles: "All the fashions bear the famous Made in France label. Those originated by members of the couture carry their famous names as well...Madeleine de Rauch dresses were sold in the best stores: Bergdorf Goodman, Bonwit Teller, Lord & Taylor, and De Pinna in Manhattan."

The two-piece ensemble was made from gray wool with caramel colored wool trim on the jacket collar and dress waist. The dress has cap sleeves and faux pocket welts and closes in back with a metal zipper. The double-breasted jacket has three-quarter length sleeves and a notched collar. It closes with two large buttons. The dress is completely lined with gray silk; the jacket is lined with caramel colored silk faille.

This ready-to-wear ensemble has the quality of construction and detail expected in couture. The dress zipper is hand stitched; the jacket button holes are self bound; and the interior is finished without raw seams. On the inside of the jacket is a handwritten tape, faded and difficult to read. I believe it lists the model number, year, and size.

The condition is excellent and wearable.

The size is marked 12.
The dress measures: 38" bust, 31" waist, 38" hip, and 39" from shoulder to hem.
The jacket measures: 42" bust, 38" waist and hem circumference, 16" from shoulder seam to shoulder seam, 18 1/2" sleeve length, and 21" from shoulder to hem.
